ILP #2 "Design" -- SketchUp



I chose to create a 3D model of the Arc de Triomphe that is located in Paris, France. This was my first time learning about SketchUp so I had to download the software and watch video tutorials before beginning my design. The structure on the left was my first try and I decided to not delete that one to show progress and what I learned by practicing.This program was much more complex than it looked and it definitely took a lot of trial and error. But with that being said, I absolutely loved this project and had a blast creating this 3D structure. I think this would be a great tool for students to use and to inform them of the history of what they are creating. I think they would gain an appreciation for the architects and laborers who build the historic landmarks that we have today.

  1. I had never heard of Sketch Up before I read this post. As a lover of art and possible future Art and/or Art History teacher, I will definitely have to try this out. Right now I'm using SketchBook on my Mac for graphic design. You might like this application, I encourage you to try it out.

    1. I had never heard of SketchUp either before seeing someone else do it for their first ILP. I loved it, I thought it was so cool that you could build this little 3D structure. I felt like an architect for sure.

  2. Kayla introduced us to Sketchup in her first ILP. I like that you replicated an historical monument. I did a quick Google search and this blog has a few other educational recommendations. I particularly like the community planning idea. Once you create the object, then what? What file format is it in?     1. I am glad I saw Kayla do this and I wanted to try my hand at it and I loved it. Once I create the object, I think it would be a great example for my students and then have them try to do a historical monument as well. Though,I think the kids would need to be in high school to grasp the software.
      I used the Snipping Tool to get a screen shot of my project and yes, I could have used other angles to display my project.

  3. Woah-- I had no idea there were applications available like that. I would be interested to see how detailed they may become and how far can you go with the design application. There are certainly a number of ways I could see this application being used in the classroom.

  4. This is the first time that I have heard of Sketch Up, but this is something that can be very helpful for art classes. Is it free to sign up for a sketch up account or does it cost money to have a membership? Also is there an appropriate grade range that you would recommend to use Sketch Up? This looks like a great teaching tool to help students learn how to master 3D art projects, or even replicate famous buildings in a history course if it is ever needed to be used for that purpose.

    1. It was free to sign up and use the software but I believe you can upgrade to more features. I was thinking that older students, such as high school, would do better in this software because it is somewhat tricky to use.
